A bright screen and a readable screen are not always the same thing. On a kayak, your seated position, the angle of the display and sunlight all affect the view. Before you start changing sonar gain because the screen looks washed out, check the light falling on the glass.

Try this three-step glare check
- Start from your fishing position. With the kayak secured and stationary, sit where you normally fish. Check whether the information is difficult to read because of a reflection or because the display itself is too dim. Keep the same screen open while comparing.
- Check shade and viewing angle. A correctly fitted visor adds shade around the display. Adjust the viewing angle only within the mount's intended range, and check access to controls. Look from your usual position rather than leaning into an angle you cannot maintain while fishing.
- Adjust backlight last. Once the screen is shaded as effectively as your setup permits, adjust brightness for readable detail. Recheck when the light changes. There is no one brightness percentage that works for every kayak, display and sun angle.

For the ECHOMAP UHD models covered by Garmin's cited owner's manual, open Settings > System > Display > Backlight, then adjust the level. Garmin also documents pressing the power key repeatedly to cycle brightness levels. Menu names can differ on other generations, so use your exact unit's manual. Give the visor a clear job
A fish finder visor is useful when you want shade at the display while it is operating. It serves a different purpose from a fitted screen cover used for travel or storage.
