Changing several sonar controls at once makes it hard to know which adjustment helped. Humminbird provides a useful starting point for MEGA Live 2, part 710310-1. Begin there, then make deliberate comparisons.
Humminbird's recommended starting settings
| Situation | Dynamic Contrast | Sensitivity | Contrast |
|---|---|---|---|
| Most water conditions | Balanced | 10 | 10 |
| Shallow water or clutter | High | 10 | 10 |
| Deeper-water bait tracking | Low | 10 | 10 |

Keep Dynamic Contrast and Contrast separate
They are different controls. Humminbird says to start Sensitivity at 10 and adjust as needed. Lower Contrast can help reveal smaller targets; higher Contrast can reduce clutter. Changing a Dynamic Contrast mode is not the same as selecting a numeric Contrast value.
Sonar Shield's comparison routine
- Choose a repeatable observation. Use the same lure, viewing direction and a similar distance. Record water depth, displayed range and your installed software before changing anything.
- Write down the baseline. Take a photo of the controls so you can restore the starting point without relying on memory.
- Change one control. Compare the relevant Dynamic Contrast mode first while retaining the starting numeric values. Avoid simultaneously changing range, palette and sensitivity.
- Judge the job you need done. Can you follow the lure consistently? Is clutter obscuring it? A visually dramatic screen is less useful than a repeatable view of the target you need.
- Record the tradeoff. Note what became easier and what became harder to see. Return to the baseline if the adjustment does not help your task.
This comparison routine is our editorial suggestion, not a manufacturer-certified optimum. Water, presentation and viewing geometry change, so a useful setting today is a starting record for the next trip, not a permanent best preset.
If an apparent settings problem also involves disconnections or restarts, document it separately with our troubleshooting help checklist.
