Major League Fishing's September 30 preview follows Justin Lucas after his Lake Erie victory as he prepares for The Champions at Old Hickory Lake, scheduled for October 29–31. The useful theme is confidence heading into a different challenge. The trophy photograph accompanying this story is from Lake Erie, not the upcoming event.

Separate confidence from a prediction

Confidence can help you make a clear decision. It cannot tell you that fish in a different lake will behave like the fish you just left. Our suggested preparation exercise begins with two short lists: what you do well, and what you still need to learn about the next fishery.

List strengths you can actually use

Be specific. You might be comfortable controlling a bait at a known depth, making accurate casts to cover or slowing down enough to repeat a productive presentation. Those are transferable skills. “They will bite the same lure” is a prediction that still needs evidence.

Turn assumptions into observations

Choose one assumption to test on the water. If you expect fish to use a particular depth or kind of cover, note what you actually see and what your presentations produce. Keep an alternative in mind so an unproductive first stop does not become an entire day of repeating the same guess.

Make a short decision log

Write down the location type, what you observed, what you tried and why you moved or stayed. Avoid rewriting the day afterward as though every choice was obvious. An honest log makes it easier to recognize a good decision even when the result was only one bite.

This exercise is our own interpretation of a useful preparation theme; it is not presented as Lucas's personal practice plan. We will distinguish official tournament results from previews as the event approaches.
